Samsung Handset Sales Top 300 Million For First Time

Samsung has reportedly sold more than 300 million handsets this year, the first time it has cracked that number.
According to Reuters, the company broke the record at the end of November, besting a 2010 total of 280 million handsets sold.
"We attained the 300 million mark because we've introduced hit models in succession by banking on upscale designs and cutting-edge technology," a Samsung exec told The Dong-A Ilbo.
Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.
In October, Samsung said global sales of its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II devices had hit more than 30 million. The Galaxy S II, in particular, sold 10 million since its February debut.
On the smartphone front, 25.5 percent of smartphone users in the U.S. had a Samsung device in the three-month period ending Oct. 31, according to recent data from comScore.
Globally, Samsung took over the top spot in the smartphone market in November after Apple briefly took the crown, IDC said.
"Samsung's ascendancy to the leadership position is the direct result of its broad and deep product portfolio," IDC Mobile Phone Technology and Trends senior research analyst Ramon Llamas said at the time. "Ever since the first Galaxy device launched last year, the company has aggressively expanded and refreshed its selection to include the latest innovations and most popular features. At the same time, its line-up of Bada-branded smartphones has earned a welcome reception within key markets."
Samsung, however, is waging a patent battle with Apple all over the world. The fight kicked off in April when Apple sued Samsung for "slavishly" copying the look and feel of the iPhone with its Galaxy line of devices. Thus far, Apple has had success getting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet tempoarily banned in Germany and, briefly, in Australia, but Samsung has had some difficulty getting Apple devices pulled from the shelves.
